What Is a corticosteroid Injection?
A corticosteroid injection or cortisone shot is an anti-inflammatory medicine, which can be injected directly into the tissues and joints that are causing your pain symptoms. Cortisone injections are generally safer than being on long term steroid tablets, which are more likely to lead to unwanted side effects. It is also safer than taking high dosages of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory tablets for longer periods of time. Furthermore, it acts directly in the area injected and is not the same as the steroids taken by bodybuilders or athletes.
What Are The Benefits of steroid injections?
The cortisone injection can help to relieve swelling, pain and stiffness caused by inflammation. This may in turn help you to start your rehabilitation and return to normal activities sooner by ‘breaking the cycle’ of pain and inflammation. It can also be helpful to aid in the diagnosis of your condition if it is not clear which structures are responsible for your pain. You may also have a local anaesthetic injected at the same time, which allows for temporary pain relief.
What Are The Risks of a cortisone shot?
Generally speaking, ultrasound-guided steroid injections are low risk. However, there are a number of potential side effects and risks that you should be aware of prior to the injection. Saw Rob for a steroid injection in my wrist and all round great experience. Didn't feel a thing during the procedure and within a week all my pain was resolved. I found Rob on google, I was in extreme pain with my Right Knee I suffer with osteoarthritis in both hips and Left knee but had been suffering terrible pain in the right to the point I couldn’t bear weight on it, with a holiday to Florida looming I reached out to Rob, explained my problem and it how urgent it was, Saw Rob 3 days latter the process was simple the scan showed some issues and I went ahead with the procedure, it was not painless but bearable and quick.
Well the difference was night and day there was a almost an instantaneous change, I had been told that after the initial pain killer wore off that it might take up to 7 Days for it to start working but I found it more bearable from the next day and by the time I flew to Florida 5 days later I was walking but with stiffness and some night time pain on resting, by 10 days I was walking and swimming with some pain but nothing anywhere like it was, now a month after the initial injection there is barely any pain unless I get it cold and then I can still walk and the pain is bearable.

Came to see Rob for frozen shoulder steriod injection, phoned me before to let me know about procedure if i wanted a normal injection or hydra one with water-hydra one i declined as i saw videos of it popping the joint

Saw Rob for the second time yesterday for another ultrasound guided steroid injection . He was BRILLIANT! Took over 30 minutes using the ultrasound , thoroughly exploring the hip area to find out what was going on . He then administered 2 injections (I was only due 1) to make sure he reached all the areas . He was so gentle and caring and put me at my ease . I would 100% recommend Rob - he’s incredibly knowledgeable and skilful . Thank goodness for him I say ! 👍

I was treated by Rob Mast at the Stanstead Abbots clinic. He was able to confirm the diagnosis of a large iliopsoas bursa and joint degeneration of the left hip, and following a formal consent protocol he carried out an ultrasound guided aspiration of the bursa and a steroid injection of the joint. I was offered an appointment very soon after first contact, Rob was extremely professional, the ultrasound images were excellent and I was able to follow the procedure easily.
The results of the treatment have been exceptional. I can move freely and in complete comfort and my wife says there is no longer any sign of a limp or uneven gait. The moments of sharp pain I would typically experience two ot three times a day have been completely absent and I no longer find myself tensing in anticipation before standing from sitting, approaching stairs, or turning over in bed.

We can't praise Rob more highly for the excellent treatment my wife received recently.From the minute of our initial contact, Rob has been friendly, extremely helpful and understanding, and thoroughly efficient throughout our contact with him. My wife had been suffering from a significant shoulder pain which was also disturbing her sleep for some weeks and had seen a physiotherapist with limited success, and she had recommended that an Ultrasound examination followed by a possible cortisone injection might be the next best step.
Rob was able to see my wife at a couple of days notice, and following a physical examination and an Ultrasound scan, identified the problem as subacromial bursitis, which would benefit from an Ultrasound guided cortisone injection.
The "3 stage" process all took place within the same appointment ( a major plus) and was completed in under an hour and at a very reasonable cost.
Within a week, my wife experienced a major improvement in her condition, and is now back to normal after less than 4 weeks.
A full clinical report, together with the Ultrasound photos were received a week or so later, as well as a copy being forwarded to our GP with her agreement.
Based on our experience, we would highly recommend Rob to anyone who feels his expertise would be beneficial.

I have no hesitation in highly recommending Rob Mast. He saw my 87 year old father on two occasions. At the first appointment he administered a steroid injection and at the second appointment he assessed a hamstring issue. On both occasions he was patient, respectful and thorough. The steroid injection proved successful in significantly reducing pain in my father's arthritic knee. On the second visit Rob spent an hour assessing my father's hamstring and determined an injection would not resolve the issue. I was referred to Sonoscope by my Physio after having several sessions of treatment on my shoulder without satisfactory success. I was very apprehensive having not had this type of treatment before, however, my worries were totally misplaced. Filling in the pre-treatment form was a little tedious but once you get into the clinic and meet Rob Mast you begin to relax. He endeavour's to explain everything in lay mans terms, and walks you through the whole procedure. He warns you the injection might hurt, but in all honesty, I'm a bit of a wimp, but the pain was far less than I had to bear continually from my shoulder/hand and was really not bad at all. The injections began to work quite quickly for me so I am over the moon and would have no worries whatsoever in returning for more treatment. I have never been more willing to recommend anybody before.

I was pleased with the treatment that I received to my shoulder. Rob Mast was professional and punctual and took time to explain his opinion to me and what were the uncertainties involved.
I attended for injection into the glenohumeral joint for frozen shoulder (6 months since onset) but because I was experiencing extreme pain at a different part of my shoulder (2 days since onset) he took the trouble to understand this new event and offer the cortisone injection in a different location. This injection alleviated the pain and I was able to return two weeks later for the planned frozen shoulder injection.

The whole experience was very good and professional.
I was a bit nervous before going in, but the lovely and friendly receptionist soon cheered me up.

My Dad first used Rob for an injection in his knee which worked really well and has significantly improved his mobility and pain. I have used Rob for 'acute tennis elbow' and have had a similar response.

I saw Rob with a frozen shoulder, which he ultrasounded then injected. He was very thorough, kind, and professional. He explained what he was doing and why, and I feel very confident in his skills. My shoulder improved a huge amount after, and I can 100% recommend him.

Would highly recommend Rob, he seemed to be an expert in his field. Was told my shoulder would need an MRI after I had the guided injection to ease my pain. The MRI appointment was handled by Rob and the appointment was set up within the week. I am just waiting on my results of this and am hopeful I will very soon be pain free. Highly recommend. Good experience, expertly handled by Robert Mast. He quickly identified the problem on my foot whilst pointing out to me on the ultrasound device the extent of the inflammation . He pinpointed the entry for injection very accurately , and I have experienced little or no pain thereafter. Hopefully this will work for several months, and once another jab was needed , there or elsewhere in my joints, would not hesitate to go back.

I recently had an ultrasound injection at the clinic and was very pleased with the service I received. I was seen at the booked time by very pleasant professionals.
The injection was swiftly and professionally administered.

I saw Dr.Mast at the London clinic, as I have an injury on my right foot and waiting times for the NHS are impossible at the moment. I was given an appointment quickly (thankfully, as the pain was getting unbearable!) and him and his nurse were attentive and professional. He explained what he was seeing on the ultrasound scan and the steroid injection went without incident. I will be going back in 6-8 months as needed!

I was really impressed with Rob Mast. He gave me a steroid injection in the hip which I was due to have on the NHS but I didn't wish to wait several months. I have quite a bit of hip history and bombarded Rob with a lot of information and he's pretty much the only person, aside for the surgeon, who has comprehended it accurately! He listens intently and you get the feeling he's really trying to get it right. A very pleasant, mellow person too. You'll be in great hands!

As a keen club runner - having run over 18 full marathons and 2 ultra-marathons - Rob’s combined expert physiotherapy and ultrasound guided injection skills have allowed me to compete at 3 ‘A race’ events over the past 10 years. I had a chronically inflamed bursa in my shoulder for almost two years. Nothing helped. I had injections done as well but still no help. I walked around with pain for a long time and had trouble sleeping.

Which Medicines can interfere with steroid injections?
Certain medications might interfere with steroids. When you are taking medications for conditions such as diabetes, cancer, or HIV, please check with your specialist whether a steroid injection is appropriate. Blood-thinning medications such as warfarin may require a blood test and a temporary adjustment/change of your medication to make sure the blood is not too thin, which might cause bleeding in the joint. If you are on blood-thinning medication such as warfarin, you should consult your specialist first to obtain his/ her advice before having an injection.

What happens during the cortisone shot treatments?
You will be placed in a comfortable position. The skin is cleaned with antiseptic. A needle is positioned into the affected area whilst the procedure is monitored by means of ultrasound guidance. The steroid (plus possibly a local anaesthetic) is injected through the needle. A plaster will be placed over the site to keep it clean.
Is the cortisone injection painful?
The cortisone injection is not particularly painful as the clinician is thoroughly trained in this procedure. Sometimes it can be sore for a few hours after the procedure.
